Mountain camping challenges your outdoor skills to the nth degree. Prepare yourself for temperature extremes, acclimatization symptoms and potentially elusive wildlife such as bighorn sheep and mountain goats.
High altitude camping requires an understanding of hydration. Campers often find themselves suffering from dehydration when camping at higher elevations.
Weather
One hour to the next, weather conditions in the mountains can quickly shift dramatically; having proper gear and planning ahead for changing conditions is crucial to having an enjoyable mountain experience.
Colorado’s mountainous regions provide stunning backdrops for athletic achievements and endurance competitions of all kinds, drawing both novice athletes and world-class competitors alike to compete each summer in massive road races, intimate trail runs and gravel bike rides across its rugged landscapes.
No matter your level of comfort, mile-high adventures provide travelers of every ability a thrilling adventure experience. Although peak physical condition may not always guarantee success in these journeys, taking steps such as prepping for altitude changes by avoiding certain activities before setting out can help minimize adverse reactions of high altitude adventures.
Temperature
Mountainous environments present unique conditions that test even experienced athletes. Their combination of high elevation, rugged terrain, and stunning views draw novice and world-class athletes alike to test their strength and endurance. From intimate trail runs to massive road races, mile-high destinations offer many ways for people to celebrate athletic accomplishments and endurance contests.
Temperature conditions in the mountains depend on many variables, including slope and soil condition. In general, as you move higher up into a mountain range it tends to get colder due to an effect known as orographic effect – moisture from the ocean rises through an air mass and condenses into clouds and precipitation, often known as precipitation.

Shelter
Some of the world’s most breathtaking mountain ranges and landscapes can be found high above sea level, drawing hikers, climbers, tourists and people simply looking to appreciate nature’s splendor. Unfortunately, these destinations do not come without risks: altitude sickness (AMS) is common when humans are unfamiliar with living at higher elevations.
Acclimatizing and planning ahead can help ease some of the negative effects, as can keeping food and water on hand. Furthermore, face masks or sleeping bags with breathable covers may help prevent moisture build-up which could otherwise cause acute mountain sickness (AMS).
Survival shelters can be an invaluable aid to combat high altitude conditions. Simply using a tarp, sticks, and branches will allow you to quickly set up a temporary structure which can keep you warm and dry on the mountainside – especially helpful if altitude sickness is an issue for you. Check out Mountainsmith LT Tarp Shelter as it’s simple setup can easily be achieved using stakes and standard hiking poles.
Lighting
Hiking through Colorado’s Rocky Mountains or gazing upon Idaho’s Seven Devils Wilderness can exhilarate even experienced outdoor enthusiasts, yet mountain camping presents unique challenges that could affect both comfort and safety.
Weather can be one of the greatest challenges: daytime temperatures can range from balmy to freezing and winds can often be intense above treeline. Furthermore, unexpected rain or snow squalls are an all-year hazard.
Thin air at higher altitudes can present another challenge; matches may be difficult to light and the conditions too dry for campfires. Therefore, firewood must be brought from far away, while using Leave No Trace principles when packing out waste (more on that later). Also make sure your tent meets alpine camping’s rigorous demands: mountaineering or expedition models might be best.https://www.youtube.com/embed/vBnVefQND5E
